2.1. Installation

Log in as delta.
Download the latest version from https://developer.apple.com/downloads.
Start Finder.
Double-click the xcode_4.5.dmg file.
Drag the Xcode.app package to the Applications folder.
Close the Xcode window.
Close Finder.
Start Terminal.
Type sudo chown -R root:wheel /Applications/Xcode.app and press Enter.
Close Terminal.
Start Xcode.
Click Agree.
Click Install to install the Device Support.
Click Start Using Xcode.
Check Show this window when Xcode launches.
Optional: Select Learn about using Xcode.
Select Xcode | Preferences.
Select the Downloads page.
Select the Components tab.
Check Check for and install updates automatically.
Click Check and Install Now.
Select Command Line Tools (115.4 MB) | Install.
Select the Documentation tab.
Check Check for and install updates automatically.
Click Check and Install Now.
Close the Preferences window.
Close Xcode.

2.2. Configuration

Import provisioning profiles.
Import developer profile.
Note: See the developer-profile.txt file.

2.3. Installation of Xcode 4.3.3

Log in as delta.
Download the latest version from https://developer.apple.com/downloads.
Start Finder.
Double-click the xcode_4.3.3_for_lion.dmg file.
Drag the Xcode package to the Applications folder.
Close the Xcode window.
Close Finder.
Start Terminal.
Type sudo chown -R root:wheel /Applications/Xcode.app and press Enter.
Close Terminal.
Start Xcode.
Click Agree.
Click Install to install the Mobile Device Framework.
Click Start Using Xcode.
Check Show this window when Xcode launches.
Select Learn about using Xcode.
Select Xcode | Preferences.
Select the Downloads page.
Select the Components tab.
Check Check for and install updates automatically.
Click Check and Install Now.
Select Command Line Tools (154.6 MB) | Install.
Select the Documentation tab.
Check Check for and install updates automatically.
Click Check and Install Now.
Close the Preferences window.
Close Xcode.

2.4. Installation of Auxiliary Tools

Log in as delta.
Download the latest version from https://developer.apple.com/downloads.
Start Finder.
Double-click the auxiliary_tools_for_xcode.dmg file.
Close Finder.

Click Agree.

Xcode Comp[onent Installation
Xcode must install the following components before continuing:
    Mobile Device Framework.
    Provides device connectivity necessary for iOS devlopment

Click Install.
Close the Xcode window.
Click Start Using Xcode.
Check Show this window when Xcode launches.
1. Select Create a new Xcode project.
2. Select Connect to a repository.
3. Select Learn about using Xcode.
4. Select Go to Apple’s developer portal.
Select Learn about using Xcode.
Select Xcode | About Xcode.
Close the window.
Close Xcode.
Restart the computer?
Note: Douwe: I need to have a permanent copy of the xcode_4.3.3_for_lion.dmg file on the virtual machine in order to run Xcode? Copied the xcode_4.3.3_for_lion.dmg file to Downloads.

Note: Douwe: I haven’t got a clue how to install Xciode with iOS SDK.

As I was finishing the second edition, in February 2012, Xcode 4.3 was released (for Lion only). Its chief innovation has to do with the organization of files on disk: instead of arriving as an installer that creates a top-level Developer folder to hold its many ancillary files and folders, Xcode 4.3 contains the Developer folder inside its file package (you can see it with the Finder’s Show Package Contents command). So when I speak of the Developer folder in this book, you would need to understand that I mean something like /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer. I have not found any other major differences between Xcode 4.2 and Xcode 4.3, and in this book I will sometimes say .Xcode 4.2. to mean Xcode 4.2 or later.

Installation

Xcode 4.3 is distributed through the Mac App Store and is installed directly into the Applications folder. By default, Xcode will download developer documentation in the background for offline reading, and automatically download documentation updates as well. This behavior can be changed after installation via the Documentation tab of the Downloads preferences panel.

Xcode 4.3.1 can co-exist on a Mac with previous versions of Xcode.

2.5. Installation of Xcode 3.2.5 and iOS SDK 4.2

Log in as delta.
Download the latest version from https://developer.apple.com/downloads.
Double-click the xcode_3.2.5_and_ios_sdk_4.2_final.dmg file.
Double-click Xcode and iOS SDK.
Click Continue.
Click Continue.
Select English.
Click Continue.
Click Agree.
Select English.
Click Continue.
